Lawn Care Program – Fertilization & Weed Control
Our lawn care program consist of regularly scheduled fertilization and weed control applications that result in a healthier, lush, green, great looking “Paradise Lawn”. Local soil conditions do not have enough nutrients to do this alone. We at Paradise Lawns take routine soil samples to analyze the soil’s fertility and nutrient levels so we can determine the most beneficial products for your lawn. We balance our blends of fertilizer with the needed nutrients into six (6) applications for a complete lawn care program, thus achieving the best possible results unmatched by our competitors. Developing a successful lawn care program requires both technical knowledge and turf management experience which you will receive with Paradise Lawns. All of our technicians are licensed by the State of Illinois, Department of Agriculture.
- Spring
- Summer
- Fall
- Winter
- Early Spring – Our first lawn care application is essential because it nourishes your lawn by replenishing the nutrients used during the winter months and promoting early spring green color. We also apply a weed control along with a pre-emergent barrier to control grassy weeds, such as crabgrass and foxtail.
Late Spring – During this lawn care application, we nourish your lawn again with a balanced slow and fast release fertilizer with additional micro-nutrients to maintain color, density, promote root growth and to build carbohydrate reserves that will be needed during the summer months. A weed control is also applied to control any broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions that may have started to grow.
- Summer – The summer months can stress any lawn. During this lawn care application, a balanced fertilizer is applied to help in heat and drought hardiness, wear tolerance and disease resistance. A broad spectrum weed control is also used to treat summer weeds and to help suppress nutsedge. Homeowners that choose to add grub control to their lawn care program will receive it in conjunction with the summer application.
Late Summer -During this lawn care application, a blend of slow release fertilizer will assist your lawn through the summer heat and humidity by adding the essential nutrients to your lawn, promoting good green color and rebuilding the carbohydrate reserves that have been depleted. Any late summer broadleaf weeds will be treated along with additional nutsedge suppression.
- Fall- Our fall lawn care application will help restore your lawn from the summer stress, providing the much needed nutrients and micro-nutrients which will contribute greatly to turf color, density, uniformity and growth rate. As with all of our treatments, any weed growth will be treated.
- Winter -Our final lawn care application of the season builds carbohydrate reserves for the winter months, provides cold hardiness, boosts root growth and allows for an early spring green-up with ample fertility for early spring growth.
Grub worms are the larval stage of beetles. During the early summer months, they are typically found just below the surface of the ground. Grubs usually go unnoticed until the results of their feeding on the root system in your lawn are observed. An active grub population can easily destroy your lawn in a very short period of time. Grub damage is by far the most common type of damage sustained in turf grasses throughout the United States. In addition to the grubs causing damage themselves, their presence tends to attract animals, such as moles, voles, birds, mice, rats, gophers, groundhogs, raccoons and skunks, who love to feed on an active grub population; thus, causing further damage to your lawn. During our summer lawn care application, a granular supplement is added to the fertilizer for season long guaranteed control of grub worms. In addition this valuable application also provides control of all type of other surface and sub-surface insects.
Lawn mowing is a fundamental part of your lawn care program, done more often than any other service. Our ongoing presence allows us to continuously monitor the health of your lawn, addressing any issues as they arise. Properly mowed lawns will have fewer weeds, allow for better moisture penetrations, provide more stress tolerance and give an overall healthier look to your yard, adding value to your property. Professional mowing requires attention to the turf type, environmental conditions and mowing height, directions and frequency; all key factors for a healthy lawn. We start with commercial grade mowers with razor sharp blades for an even, clean cut without damaging the grass blade. Trimming, edging and clean-up of clipping are included with every cut. We offer completely customizable mowing schedule options including weekly, bi-weekly, as needed, or occasional, great for times while you are away on vacation or just need some extra time for other activities.
The process of removing plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn. Most turf grasses growing in heavy clay or poor soils benefit greatly from annual aeration to reduce thatch buildup and more importantly, relieve soil compaction. This service will help improve the recycling flow of air, water, and nutrients to the root system. This, in turn, will help to rejuvenate your grass by allowing the roots to grow deeper, creating healthier grass plants and keeping your lawn thicker, greener and healthier.
Our local weather conditions require grasses that can withstand the extreme temperature variations from winter to summer. We use a top quality blend that contains a variety of five fescue grasses and a bluegrass that are certified weed free. This optimal combination allows for a rich, dense, healthy lawn all season long and aids in choking out weeds. For those who want to have a bluegrass only lawn, we use a premium blend of bluegrass that has been tested for best results with our local weather conditions. Today’s grass blends are more drought tolerant and disease resistant from blends just three years ago.
Grass is like any other living plant; it becomes weaker as it ages. To keep your lawn from looking old and tired, we will determine and recommend which of the following seeding options would be most beneficial to keep it looking exquisite year after year.
Overseeding: The process of using a broadcast spreader to apply grass seed on the surface of the ground. To increase the percentage of germination, we recommend in conjunction with our aeration service. The cores created by aeration allow the seeds to drop below the surface of the ground for successful germination.
Power Seeding: The process of utilizing a machine with knife-like blades to create slits in your lawn, which allows grass seed to drop below the surface of the ground, maximizing the percentage of germination. The knife blades are designed to minimize damage to the lawn. Power seeding is the fastest way to restore a weak lawn and can be used for touch-ups of small bare areas or for complete lawn renovations.
The process of removing core samples from your lawn and then sending them to an independent testing laboratory for analysis. Soil testing will determine pH, available nutrients and organic matter percentage. With these results, corrective actions can then be taken, thus achieving the best possible results with your lawn. Soil testing is also a key tool to use when diagnosing a particular problem such as poor turf color, low seed germination, bare spots and continuous disease susceptibility.
Installing a new lawn and doing it the proper way from the beginning will ensure the best possible results and years of enjoyment. All too often a lawn is established incorrectly, costing a homeowner more money, aggravation in fixing problems and doing things a second time. Paradise Lawns will customize a new lawn construction project to meet your expectations, budget and desired results.
We begin the process by taking a soil test and including any recommendations provided back from the testing laboratory to the installation process. This is the optimum time to correct any soil deficiencies present in nutrients, organic matter percentage and pH, all of which will contribute to the color, turf density and health of a lawn. We will finish grade the property, pulverizing the soil, thus making the perfect seed bed. We use a top quality seed blend that contains a variety of five fescue grasses and a bluegrass that are certified weed free. This optimal combination allows for a rich, dense, healthy lawn all season long and aids in choking out weeds. For homeowners that prefer to have a bluegrass only lawn, we use a premium blend of bluegrass that has been tested for best results with our local weather conditions. We will apply a starter fertilizer to aid in the germination process and then straw the lawn to keep moisture from escaping. For steep grades and areas where erosion is a concern, we can install straw blankets and pin them to the ground.
This highly effective insecticide program is used to control damaging insects such as Japanese beetles, bag-worms, mites, grasshoppers and other leaf-chewing insects. Our 5 application broad spectrum systemic program includes a combination of dormant oil, contact & systemic insecticides, and fungicide products that will protect all of your valuable ornamental trees, shrubs, landscape plantings and floral plant-scapes. This program is not a fertilization program. For information on our landscape plantings fertilization program, please refer to Deep Root Fertilization.
Deep root fertilization is the most effective method for fertilizing trees and shrubs, typically done in late fall. Through this process, a liquid, time-released fertilizer is pressure-injected in a grid pattern below the surface of the ground, down into the root zone of the tree or shrub. Well nourished trees and shrubs have better resistance to disease and drought. Deep root fertilizing can help keep your trees and shrubs healthier, promoting the luxurious foliage that adds beauty and value to your property. This service is not an insecticide program. For insecticide control, please refer to the Tree & Shrub Care.
Target the insects where they live…outside! By eliminating the insects around the perimeter of a building or home, we are keeping them from entering the household through cracks in the foundation, doorways and windows. This pest control service targets more than 180 different insects including ants, spiders, crickets, fleas, ticks, silver fish and roaches.
Much like Perimeter Pest Control, this pest control service targets the insects living within the lawn. Ants, spiders, fleas, ticks, crickets, sod web worms, and hundreds of more insects can be controlled allowing you, your family and your pets to fully enjoy your beautiful pest free lawn.
A mole’s diet is restricted to ground invertebrates such as grubs, millipedes, ants and the like. However, a mole’s primary food source is the earthworm. Our mole extermination program consists of baiting active runways with bait that provides a lethal dose of Bromethalin. This bait so closely mimics the earthworm that moles respond to it naturally. Within 24 hours of consumption a mole will expire, thus stopping its destructive damage to your lawn.
